She was a six-time All-American, earning the honor three times in indoor track, twice in outdoor track and once in cross country. At the NCAA championships, she finished sixth in the indoor mile in 1989 and fourth the following year. Her third-place performance in the 1500 at the 1990 outdoor championships equaled a former NCAA record (4:09.85). She placed second in the 1991 NCAA indoor mile, third in the 1991 NCAA outdoor 1500 and 16th in the 1990 NCAA cross country championships. Best, who earned All-Ivy honors 12 times, took first place at the 1990 Heptagonal cross country championships. She was voted the outstanding female performer at the 1990 outdoor Heptagonal championships when she won three events - the 1500 meters, the 3,000 in Heps and school record time, and she ran the second leg of the first-place 3200-meter relay. Best, who won All-East honors six times, captured two indoor ECAC titles, the mile run in 1989 and the 800 in 1991. Over her four-year career, she set five Cornell track records. Best the 1991 Cornell Sun Athlete of the Year, helped the Big Red to indoor and outdoor Hepatagonal team championships as a senior. She participated in the 1500-meter U.S. Olympic team trials in 1992 and 1996 and attended the 1991 World University Games in Sheffield, England. She was selected to represent the U.S. at the Seventh International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) World Championships in Seville, Spain, in 1999.
