A three-year regular in lacrosse and a four-year member of the field hockey squad, she helped the 1978 lacrosse team to a second-place finish in the New York state tournament. She was a runner-up in team scoring in 1976 (16-8-24), and was third as a junior (5-11-16) and senior (20-11-31). She currently ranks second on the Cornell career assist list. Hartwell was selected as radio station WVBR female athlete of the year in 1978.
