At Cornell
A versatile defender, Spooner has moved from linebacker to defensive end and back, and he has been productive at each spot. In 2010, Spooner started all 10 games on the defensive line and posted 16 tackles with 1.5 stops for a loss and a blocked kick. Spooner recorded three tackles against Wagner, Bucknell and Colgate, while blocking a kick against the Raiders. Spooner made 18 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks while recovering a pair of fumbles as a sophomore in 2009. Spooner was outstanding in his final two games, breaking through with eight tackles, including 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks with a fumble recovery against Columbia. He closed out the year with six tackles at Penn. Spooner also recovered a fumble at Dartmouth. Spooner earned his first varsity letter as a freshman in 2008 for his play on special teams. Spooner played in each of the final six contests of 2008. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

At St. Edward
A two-time all-district selection at linebacker at St. Edward HS, Spooner served as team captain as a senior. A three-year starter and varsity letter winner, he was the team’s leading tackler with 80 stops in his final season. The team’s Leadership Award winner, he was chosen to receive the Northeastern Ohio’s scholar-athlete award by the National Football Foundation. Spooner registered 200 career tackles and was selected to play in the East-West All-Star game as a senior in 2007. Spooner helped his team to a pair of state playoff appearances, including a state semifinal berth as a sophomore. He also played two seasons of basketball.

Personal
Michael Bernard Spooner is the son of Michael and Sharon Spooner and has an older sister and brother. His brother, Alex ‘09, played tight end on the Big Red football team.
