Biography

At Cornell:

Following a breakthrough sophomore cross-country season in 2005 in which he lowered his Van Cortlandt Park 8k PR by nearly two minutes, placed 20th in the Northeast Regional meet and earned All-East with 13th at IC4As, Canaday continued his remarkable improvement as a junior. Leading the Big Red to victory in the opening dual meet with Army by finishing first overall on the tough West Point course, Canaday went on to earn 2nd-team All-Ivy honors with a 12th-place finish at Heps and then ended his cross country season in style with a 3rd at IC4As, becoming only the 12th Cornell runner in history to break 25:00 at VCP with his 24:59 time. During the winter, Canaday took to the roads, barely missing the Olympic Trials standard with a 2:22:21 debut marathon in Houston, setting a school record by over five minutes. Determined to achieve the Olympic Trials marathon mark, Canaday overcame sunny, 75-degree conditions to duck under the 2:22:00 standard with a gritty 2:21:43 at Grandma’s Marathon in June, becoming the only collegian to qualify for the US Olympic Marathon Trials with a marathon mark. As he continues his career, Canaday will have his sight set on competing with the nation’s finest whether it be in cross country, on the roads or on the track. At Sheridan: Canaday finished 13th in the state cross country meet as a senior and recorded best track times of 4:09.2 for 1,500 meters and 8:46.14 for 3,000 meters. A long distance specialist from the beginning of his running career, he also ran a strong 32:05 10k on the road in high school. Personal: Sage Clifton Read Canaday is the son of Clifton and Pamela Ando Canaday and has an older brother and a younger sister.
