James Gowans' up-to-date results
As a Senior (2016-17)
Gowans follwed up his strong junior cross country campaign with an even more impressive senior season, culminating in a 10th place finish at the Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships to earn All-Ivy honors. Gowans, who scored ine very meet, finished 16th at the Spiked Shoe Invitational, 44th at the Paul Short 8K Gold Race, 138th at the Adidas Pre-Nationals, and 33rd at the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
On the track, James Gowans wrapped up his decorated career for Cornell at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, taking 17th in the 1500 meters. During the season, he racked in eight top-three finishes including four wins and a third-place finish in the mile at the Ivy League Indoor Track and Field Championships as well as runner-up status in the DMR. The distance runner won the 1500 title at the IC4A/ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships while also earning wins in the mile at the UCLA Legends Invite and Deneault Memorial. Gowans also took first in the 3000 at the competitive Nittany Lion Challenge. He currently holds the school record in the indoor mile (3:58.24) as well as the freshman record (4:06.20).
As a Junior (2015-16)
Gowans had a stellar junior season, finishing 29th at Ivy League Cross Country Championships and advancing to the NCAA Division I Northeast Region Championships, where he finished 33rd in a field of the best runners in the Northeast.
He carried his success into track season, becoming the first Cornellian to run a sub-four-minute mile, finishing in 3:58.24 for an event win at the indoor Fastrack National Invitational and qualifying for NCAA Indoor Championships, where he placed ninth. He also picked up a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters at Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonals. Outdoors, he never finished out of the top three, winning the 1500 at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell, placing third in the same event at Outdoor Heps, and helping the 4x800 team to a third-place finish at Heps.
As a Sophomore (2014-15)
Gowans finished eighth in the season-opening meet at Army, coming in with an 8K time of 25:09.10. He also picked up a 25
th-place finish at Princeton.

On the track, at the Beantown Challenge, he dominated the mile to win in 4:10.26 and anchored the 4x800 relay team, as they finished first by over seven seconds. He grabbed the no. 2 spot in Cornell indoor track history with his 800 time of 1:49.78 at the SPIRE Invitational. His 4:04.35 mile at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge placed him at no. 6 all-time in the Cornell indoor track record books. He also placed no. 7 on the all-time program outdoor list with a 1500 time of 3:46.88 at the Stanford Invitational. At Ivy League Indoor Heptagonals, he finished third in the mile at 4:07.40. In the 4xMile event at Penn Relays, Gowans’ relay team took 10
th overall in 16:40.15, the third-fastest time in school history. In Outdoor Heps, he finished second in the 1500 with a time of 3:54.07.
As a Freshman (2013-14)
Gowans' freshman cross country campaign began with a 12th-place finish at the season-opener agaisnt Army with a time of 26:13.0. He also ran at the Paul Short Invitational and the Princeton Invitational (24:54.0).
The freshman also had an impressive debut season on the track. He had a strong showing at the Robert J. Kane Invitational, taking home 2
nd place in the mile, while also helping the Big Red score a 2
nd place finish in the 4x8. At the Indoor Heps he helped the Big Red’s distance medley relay team take home 4
th place. He concluded the indoor season with an excellent performance at the Indoor IC4A’s the following week. He finished 4
th in the mile with a career best time of 4:06.20. He continued his success outdoors, finishing 4
th in the 1500 at the Stanford Invitational. He wrapped up his first year with a 3
rd place finish in the 1500 at the Outdoor IC4A’s.
