Biography

At Cornell:

Wyner has turned heads since his freshman year. As a rookie, he was runner-up in the mile at Heps in a freshman record before having a 1:48.9 carry on the indoor 4x800 school-record and IC4A championship team which had the nation’s best indoor time (7:26.74). Outdoors, he picked up a school-record 1:48.64 in the open 800, ran key legs on school record-setting DMR (9:33.32) and 4xMile (16:29.21) teams at Penn Relays, before anchoring the team to the outdoor IC4A title. As a sophomore, he opened his track season with the indoor 1,000 school record (2:24.58) before anchoring the 4x800 unit to two more IC4A crowns. Last year, Wyner began transferring his middle distance prowess to the cross-country scene, displaying much-improved fitness for the longer distances. Gaining confidence throughout the 2006 fall season, Wyner culminated his breakthrough season as a harrier with a stunning 72-second PR in a runner-up performance at the Heps championships. His time of 24:32 for the historic Van Cortlandt Park 8k course ranks as the second-best performance in Cornell history at that venue. A calf injury slightly hampered Wyner indoors, but he partially rebounded in time to win the Heps 800 with an indoor school record. He also anchored the fifth straight IC4A 4x800 win for the Big Red. Wyner’s 2007 outdoor campaign was highlighted by a fine 3:42.80 for 1,500 meters (second all-time at Cornell), a mark which was 0.24 seconds short of qualifying for the NCAA meet. Wyner also anchored a sixth place DMR showing at the Penn Relays in the second-best outdoor time in school history, and completed a hard-fought double at the Heps, where he ran 3:44.80 for third in an extremely competitive 1,500 and came back later in the afternoon to run 1:50.96 for second in the 800. Now confident in his ability as a harrier, Wyner has his sights set on a conference individual championship and a spot in the NCAA meet in cross-country as well as on the track. At Mainland Regional: Wyner captured the group championship in both the 800 and 1,600 before winning the Meet of Champions in the 1,600. He had high school bests of 1:53.09 for 800 meters and 4:11.49 for 1,600 meters. Personal: James Michael Wyner is the only child of Jim and Ann Wyner.
