Donegan was a three-sport athlete who competed in swimming, football and track and field at Avon Central HS. He competed in the breast stoke for the four-time sectional champions, earning four varsity letters. He was on the varsity football team for two seasons as a cornerback and wide receiver, and also was a distance runner for two years on the track team.

Personal
Sean William Donegan is the son of William and Mary Donegan and has a younger brother and sister. His grandfather (Gerald Coyne), great uncle (Dick Coyne), two uncles (Malachy Coyne and Scott Weissman) and two aunts (Catherine Weissman and Meg Donegan) all attended Cornell. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
