At Cornell
Former Big Red rower Bill Brumsted ’11 was promoted to associate head coach in the spring of 2020 after seven successful seasons on the Big Red coaching staff, first as a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons and then as an assistant coach for five years. Regardless of what hat he has worn, Brumsted's desire to do whatever it takes to better the Cornell’s men’s lightweight program has been unwavering. He has helped mold the team into the perennial powerhouse that it is today, winning four national championships in the last six seasons.

During his time as an assistant coach, Brumsted helped facilitate the Big Red’s dominance, as the team comprised a dual meet record of 25-6 to go along with three national championships and two Ivy League titles. Overall, Cornell earned 13 Eastern Sprints and seven IRA medals during Brumsted’s tenure as assistant coach.

The Big Red didn’t stop with just a national title at the IRA Championships in 2015 and 2019, however, as the team also brought home the team points trophy in each of those seasons. In 2015, this award came after Cornell won the Jope Cup at the EARC Sprints, which is given to the team that scores the highest total points. Brumsted’s third lightweight eight also emerged victorious at the 2015 Eastern Sprints, hoisting the Kilpatrick Cup.

A year later, Brumsted coached the varsity lightweight 4- to a national title at the 2016 IRA National Championships. More recently in 2018, he helped Cornell win its first lightweight 8+ title at the Head of the Charles since 1979, in addition to guiding the junior varsity lightweight 8+ to the Cornell Trophy at the 2019 EARC Sprints.

Brumsted has truly worked his way up the ladder, also serving as a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons and positively impacting the Big Red every step of the way. In his two seasons as a volunteer, Brumsted assisted with all aspects of the program that won the 2014 IRA National Championship, as well as the Jope Cup. He was responsible for coaching the lightweight third varsity eight to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and podium finishes at the EARC Sprints. He also ran the PE 1575 course - Introduction to Competitive Rowing, and selected athletes to join the Big Red program.
