Farrell rowed for four years with the Oakland Strokes and attended Bentley School. He rowed in the national championships in the 2005-06 season.

James Macklin Farrell is the son of Jim and Catherine Farrell and he has one younger brother. He is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
