Makar lettered twice in cross country, once in indoor track and once in tennis at Notre Dame high school. He earned SCC All-Academic honors in 2007.

John Edward Makar is the son of John and Ellen Makar and he has one younger sister. His great-uncle Michael Makar graduated from Cornell. Makar is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
