Biography
As a senior (2019-20)
• Member of the Big Red’s lightweight four at the 55th Head of the Charles Regatta, helping the boat place sixth among 16 boats in 16:18.277.
• Rowed on the Cornell A 8+ boat that finished as the runner-up in Flight 2 at the Cornell Autumn Classic with a mark of 11:03.56.
• Along with partner Alex Kost, finished fourth in the men’s 2- at the Cornell Autumn Classic with a time of 13:34.62.
• Rowed on the second varsity eight that placed eighth out of 30 boats in Flight 1 at the Princeton Chase with a time of 13:35.915.
• Spring 2020 season canceled due to COVID-19.
As a junior (2018-19)
• Served as the stroke for the second varsity eight during his junior campaign.
• Led the second varsity eight to a gold medal at the EARC sprints with a time of 6:42.95.
• Won a bronze medal with the varsity 4+ in the Grand Final at the IRA Championships.
• Guided the second varsity eight to victories over Dartmouth, Princeton, and Columbia.
As a sophomore (2017-18)
• Stroked the second varsity eight for the majority of his sophomore season before moving into the varsity eight for IRAs.
• Won a silver medal with the second varsity eight at Eastern Sprints.
• Led the second varsity eight to wins over Princeton, MIT, and Dartmouth.
• Stroked the varsity eight to a second place finish in the Petite Finals at IRAs.
As a freshman (2016-17)
• Consistent member of the third varsity eight throughout his rookie season.
• Helped the crew defeat Princeton, Columbia & MIT, and Dartmouth.
• Also rowed for the third varsity eight that placed fourth in the Grand Final at the 2017 EARC Sprints.
Prior to Cornell
• Earned five varsity letters at Haddonfield Memorial High School, serving as team captain and earning the team’s Coach’s Award as a senior.
• Won three N.J. State Championships, taking gold in the men’s junior varsity eight (2014, 2015) and the men’s coxed four (2016).
• Earned a silver medal in the men’s junior varsity eight at the 2015 SRAA Championships, and took gold in the same boat at the 2014 City Championship.
• Also won a bronze medal in the men’s coxed four at the 2016 City Championship.
Personal
• Luke James Small is the son of Jim and Liz Small and he has two younger brothers.
• Enrolled in the College of Engineering.
