Senior Season - 2009
Devitt helped to shore up the central defense in his senior season, providing a veteran presence along with newcomer Bennett Kenyon. Devitt started in 15 of the Big Red's 17 matches, and finished tied for sixth on the team scoring charts with five points on one goal and three assists. He scored his first point of the year on Oct. 13 with an assist in the 3-1 win against Colgate, and then turned in a three-point contest on Oct. 17 at Yale, scoring a goal and adding an assist against the Bulldogs. Devitt capped his Cornell career by picking up an assist on Matt Bouraee's game-winning goal in the season finale in overtime.
Junior Season - 2008
Devitt made two starts among his 10 appearances as a junior, starting on Oct. 15 against Penn State at Berman Field and in the season finale against Columbia a month later.
Sophomore Season - 2007
Devitt appeared in 11 games as a sophomore, making four starts. He started the first two games of the season to help the Big Red to its first in-season tournament title since 1983, winning the UK Nike Soccer Classic in Lexington, Ky. He also started against Penn State on Oct. 23 and again at Penn to close out the season on Nov. 17.
Freshman Season - 2006
Devitt appeared in eight games as a freshman, earning three starts in his first season. He made his first collegiate start on Sept. 17 at Boston University, and delivered an assist on J.J. Bain’s game-tying goal in the second half. He also started a pair of Ivy League games, finding his way into the opening 11 against Columbia and Penn.
At St. Ignatius College Prep
Devitt earned three varsity letters playing for St. Ignatius. He captained the team as a senior and was named to the all-state team by the IHSA and the all-area first team team by the Chicago Daily Southtown. He was also the team’s defensive MVP. Devitt captained the Husa Soccer Club, which advanced to the U19 finals in 2006. His Husa U18 team won the Midwest Region II League championship in 2005. In 2004, Devitt won the Adidas Warrior Classic “Gold Cup” with the Husa U-17 team and in 2003 was the only U-15 player to make the U-16 roster.
Personal
Matthew Paul Devitt is the son of Paul and Mara Devitt and has two younger brothers and a younger sister. He is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences.
