The Richard W. Gilbert Head Coach of Diving

Rick Gilbert has been doing an outstanding job of coaching Cornell divers since 1968. He was also head swimming coach from 1971-74 before returning to his diving coach responsibilities. A 1965 graduate of Indiana University, Gilbert won five Big Ten diving titles and was the NCAA 1-meter champion as a junior. He won four National AAU 3-meter titles and was the victor on both the 1-meter board and 10-meter platform once. Gilbert won both the 3- and 10-meter events at the World Student Games in Budapest, Hungary, in 1965, and was a member of the U.S. team at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where he placed 17th on the 10-meter platform. In Gilbert[apos]s 38-year tenure, Cornell divers have won 13 Eastern titles. In addition, four have garnered All-America honors. Gilbert was named Diving Coach of the Meet at the Eastern championships for women in 1991, 1992 and 1993. A native of Lancaster, Pa., the McCaskey HS graduate was a high school All-American for three years. In 1967, he received his master[apos]s degree in physical education from Indiana University. He is a past chairman of the NCAA Diving Rules Committee and was selected as the 1984 EISL men[apos]s diving coach of the year. He is a member of the Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame.
