Biography
• Team Captain (2019-20)
As a junior (2019-20)
• Elected team captain during his junior season.
• Competed in all nine meets for the Big Red, including the Ivy League Championships.
• Qualified for the B Final of the 400-IM (3:53.76) and 200-breaststroke (2:00.14) at Ivies, placing 11th and 14th, respectively.
• Also scored points in the 100-breaststroke at the conference meet, making the C Final and placing 23rd in 55.93.
• Raced in four individual events at the Zippy Invitational (100- and 200-breaststroke, 200- and 400-IM), finishing in the top-four of every one.
• Placed second in the 200-breaststroke at the Zippy Invitational, capturing a personal-best and posting the sixth-fastest time in Cornell history in prelims (1:59.33).
• Finished third in the 200-IM at the Zippy Invitational in a personal-best 1:49.14, a mark which ranks 10th in the Big Red record books.
• Placed fourth in the 100-breaststroke at the Zippy Invite after swimming a personal-best 55.43 in prelims.
• Recorded six individual top-five finishes at dual meets over the course of the season.
As a sophomore (2018-19)
• Scored in the 100 and 200 breast and the 400 IM at the Ivy League Championships.
• Owned the team's third-fastest marks of the season in both the 200 breast (2:01.58) and the 400 IM (3:57.14).
• Won the 200 breast race at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational, taking second in the 400 IM and fourth in the 200 IM.
• Took third in the 200 IM in a dual meet win at Bryant.
As a freshman (2017-18)
• Swam an NCAA B cut time in the 400 IM (3:53.06) in placing ninth at the Ivy League Championship, the second-fastest time in Cornell history.
• Won the C final of the 200 breast in an NCAA B time of 1:59.63.
• Also scored in the 100 breast.
• Won the 400 IM in a dual meet against St. Bonaventure and earned top three finishes in both the 100 and 200 breast and 200 and 400 IM races at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational.
• Earned the team's Hardest Worker Award.
Prior to Cornell
• Downs was a two-time All-American in the 200 IM and 200 medley relay at the Westminster Schools.
• Part of the 200 medley relay state record-breaking team.
• Was state runner-up in the 200 IM and 100 back.
• Winter Junior Nationals Finalist
• Three-time scholastic All-American
• Named captain of the swim and dive team.
Personal
• Owen Edward Downs is the son of Mark and Susie Downs and has an older sister.
• He is enrolled in the College of Engineering.
