Biography
As a junior (2019-20)
• Competed in eight meets for the Big Red as a junior.
• Swam three season-best times at the Zippy Invitational, qualifying for the A Final of the 200-butterfly, 200-freestyle, and 200-IM.
• Finished third among 24 swimmers in the 200-butterfly at the Zippy Invitational in 1:50.63.
• Placed fifth in the 200-IM (1:49.95) and sixth in the 200-freestyle (1:40.41) at the Zippy Invite, both times of which were season-bests.
• Swam a pair of top-three times in an Ivy League dual against Brown, finishing second in the 200 IM and third in the 200-butterfly in a season-best 1:49.80.
• Emerged victorious in the 200-freestyle against Binghamton.
• Placed second in the 100-butterfly in Cornell victories over St. Bonaventure and Binghamton.
• Finished among the top-five in the 200-IM in meets against Columbia and Yale, including a third place showing against the Lions.
• Placed fifth in the 200-butterfly against Columbia, Yale, and Harvard/Dartmouth.
As a sophomore (2018-19)
• Swam the lead leg of two of the 10 fastest 800 free relays in school history, including a 6:39.74 at the Ivy League Championship for No. 7 all-time at Cornell.
• Scored in the 200 free (22nd, 1:41.10), the 200 fly (23rd, 1:50.47) and the 200 IM (24th, 1:48.94) at the Ivy meet.
• Had the 10th-fastest time in school history in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.56 at Ivies.
• Finished third in the 200 fly and sixth in the 100 fly against Brown.
• Won both the 100 and 200 free in a dual meet at Bryant.
• Captured first place in the 200 free against St. Bonaventure and the 200 IM vs. Dartmouth, Yale and Columbia.
• Won the 100 IM at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational while taking second in the 200 IM.
As a freshman (2017-18)
• Made the Ivy League Championship lineup, scoring in three individual events and as part of the 800 free relay.
• Took 13th in the 200 fly and 400 IM, 20th in the 200 IM
• Swam the fifth-fastest 400 IM time in school history (3:55.52) and the sixth-fastest 200 IM time (1:49.08).
• Anchored the 800 free relay that posted the fourth-fastest time in school history (6:34.73), a time that was the best at Cornell since 2009.
• Won his final five individual dual meet event races, including sweeping the 200 fly and 200 IM against both Brown and Columbia.
• Also won the 200 free against St. Bonaventure and the 200 IM against MIT in his first collegiate event.
• Won the 200 IM and was part of the 400 medley relay that captured the title at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational.
• Claimed second in the 200 fly and third in the 400 IM at Ithaca.
Prior to Cornell
• A four-year member of the swimming team at Mission Viejo HS, Chua was a USA Swimming Scholar-Athlete All-American.
• Set a school record in the 100 fly previously held by U.S. Olympian Jesse Vassallo. Champion in the 200 IM at the USA Swimming Futures Championships, taking a runner-up finish in both the 400 IM and the 200 fly.
Personal
• Min Zhi Chua is the son of Eric Chua and May Ying Leong and has an older sister.
• He is enrolled in the College of Engineering.
