He finished second in the event at Outdoor Heptagonals. Indoors, he started the season undefeated, winning three straight races in the campaign's first three weeks.

As a Junior (2013-14)
Melly had an outstanding junior season that saw him finish 7th overall at the Pre-National Meet with a time of 25:14.6 and 43rd overall at the Ivy League/Heptagonal Championships, where he ran a season-best 8K time of 24:44.0. He also ran at the season-opener against Army, the Boston College Invitational and the Paul Short Men's Gold Run.

Melly followed his excellent cross country season with a strong year on the track as well. He kicked off the indoor season with a career best mile time of 4:18.76 in a 9th place finish at the Nittany Lion Challenge. He added a 4th place finish in the 1000 at the Deneault Memorial. He concluded the indoor season at the IC4A’s where he posted a career best 3000 time of 8:22.65 to finish 33rd. His main event during the outdoor season was the 3000 steeplechase. He took home 10th place with a then career best 9:12.80 at the Penn Relays. He shattered that mark at the Outdoor Heps, where he finished 3rd with a time of 8:58.85. He wrapped up his junior year at the NCAA East Prelims where he finished 42nd in the 3000 steeplechase.

As a Sophomore (2012-13)
Melly was 32nd at the season-opening Army-Binghamton tri-meet and an even stronger 22nd at the Paul Short Run's open race a few weeks later. At the Princeton Invitational, Melly ran 52nd place and was the Big Red's third scorer. He finished his year with a 15th-place showing at the John Reif Memorial Run on The Moakley Course.

On the track, Melly continued to run distance events. He placed 31st at the Indoor IC4As in the 3K and ran 10th at the Outdoor Heps in the 3K steeplechase. He set a new personal best in the mile and the 3K steeplechase during the year.

As a Freshman (2011-12)
Melly started his Cornell career strongly with an 11th-place finish at the season-opening Army-Binghamton meet. He contributed a 24th-place showing at the Colgate Invitational the next week, and he followed that by coming running in the Paul Short Invitational's open race. His season concluded with a stellar 10th-place showing at the Yellowjacket Invitational.

Before Cornell
Incoming freshman David Melly looks to follow up a successful high school career in cross-country and track and field in a Cornell uniform. As a high schooler, he set seven school records in indoor and outdoor track, in distances ranging from the 1000-meter run to the 2 mile. Melly was a three-season captain and six-time league champion, in addition to qualifying for Nationals as a junior and a senior. His 9:20 best in the 2 mile placed third at the MA indoor state meet, and despite battling injury his final season of high school, a fourth-place finish in the same event at the state meet in outdoor track. In addition, he sported a 4:22 personal best in the mile.
