Smith's up-to-date results

As a Senior (2017-18)
• Competed at the Indoor Heps, taking seventh in the 4x800 relay (7:46.04) and 10th in the 500 meters (1:05.29).
• Collected nine top-10 finishes on the year.
• Part of the winning DMR (10:29.05) at the Upstate Challenge.

As a Junior (2016-17)
• Had a strong junior campaign for Cornell that included nine top three finishes.
• Indoors, was a part of two first place 4x400 meter relay teams at the Greg Page Relays and the Southern Tier Collegiate Open and also took the individual 500 meter title at the Columbia East-West Challenge (1:05.71).
• In first collegiate 800, finished second at the Robert J. Kane Invitational (1:56.29).
• Outdoors, took fifth in the 400 hurdles (55.58) and second in the 800 (PR, 1:55.04) at the UCLA Legends Invitational.

As a Sophomore (2015-16)
• In sophomore campaign, continued to run the 400, 500 and sprint relays for the Big Red.
• Indoors, his 4x400 team took first at the Southern Tier Collegiate Open and second place at the Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup – the same meet in which he set a personal best in the 400 (49.43).
• Also took first in the 500 at the Cornell Sunday Invitational and finished fifth overall in the same event at the Ivy League Indoor Track and Field Championships to earn a spot in the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

As a Freshman (2014-15)
• Competed primarily in the 400 in his freshman season, running in three indoor and two outdoor meets.
• Finished second (50.99) at the Deneault Memorial, third (50.80) at the Cornell Sunday Invitational and fifth (51.90) at the Kane Invitational, where his 4x400 relay team took second. 
• Outdoors, his 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams both placed third at the Upstate Challenge.

Before Cornell
• Like his twin-brother Michael, James was a major contributor in the 400 and the relay teams.
• He took home 4th place in the 400 at the Minnesota State Championships, while also running solid legs in 1st place finishes for both the 4x2 and 4x4 relay teams.
