Benson's up-to-date results
As a Junior (2017-18)
• Placed fourth in the discus at the Outdoor Heps with a season-best toss of 164-4.
• Took 15th in the discus at the Outdoor IC4A Championships (152-5).
• Won the discus at the Big Red Outdoor Invitational with a mark of 153-6.
• Garnered nine top-five finishes throughout the year.
• Notched personal record in the outdoor shot put at the Titan Team Challenge (46-6 3/4) and in the indoor shot put at the Greg Page Relays (47-3).
• Recorded personal best in the weight throw at the Nittany Lion Challenge (48-2 1/2).
As a Sophomore (2016-17)
• Had another strong year for the Big Red throws squad.
• Came on strong towards the end of the outdoor season, winning the Ithaca College Tuesday Meet before going on to finish fifth at the Ivy League Outdoor Track and Field Championships (161’5”).
• Indoors, had five top 10 showings in the weight throw, using a career best 46’8.25” for fourth place at the Upstate Challenge.
As a Freshman (2015-16)
• Had a stellar freshman campaign for the Big Red throwing team, making it all the way to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round in the discus after finishing third overall at the Ivy League Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a season-best throw of 55.84.
• Also added second place finishes in the discus and shot put at the Cornell Outdoor Upstate Challenge and the Big Red Invitational.
• Indoors, finished in the top 10 on five occasions: in the shot put, finished sixth at the Southern Tier Collegiate Open (44’11.5”), seventh at the Cornell Indoor Upstate Challenge (45’8.5”), ninth at the Robert J. Kane Invitational (42’6”) and fourth at the Marc Deneault Invitational (45’4.5”)’ in the weight throw, placed eighth at the Cornell Sunday Invitational (42’2.75”).
Before Cornell
• A two-time State Sectional shot put champion and State Group 4 discus Champion, Benson earned First Team All-Shore honors in 2015.
• He captained the Toms River High School North team for three years and was named second team All-State in 2014.
• He holds personal bests of 180 feet, 2 inches in the discus and 58 feet, 8 inches in the shot put.
• Benson also played three years of high school football, was a member of the National Honors Society and was first chair cello in the school orchestra.
Personal
• Kevin James Benson is the son of Lori Benson.
• He has two older brothers, Jason and Bryan, and is enrolled in the College of Engineering.
