As a Sophomore (2012-13)
After spending all of his freshman season in the multi events, Athanasopoulos specialized in the long jump in his second year on campus. The sophomore had a seasonal best of 23' 1 3/4" at the Kane Invite in February.
He also ran the 60 hurdles four times during the year, finishing in a season-best 8.68 seconds twice.
As a Freshman (2011-12)
Athanasopoulos showed promise in the decathlon starting with his sixth-place performance at the Outdoor Heptagonal Championship. He scored 6,468 points -- setting a school freshman record and good enough for 10th all-time at Cornell -- and was the second-best freshman finisher. He did even better the following week at the IC4A Outdoors, taking fifth place in a larger field and scoring four points for Cornell. After the year, he competed at the US Junior National Championships in the decathlon, placing 10th.
Before Cornell
Athanasopoulos has competed in a number of events but most prominently in the long jump (22' 7"), triple jump (46' 1"), and 110m high hurdles (14.34). In the past two high school indoor and outdoor seasons he has seven individual state titles (55m HH, 110m HH twice, LJ-twice, TJ, 300m IH) and four New Hampshire Meet of Champions titles (110m HH, TJ twice, LJ). He has also competed in the decathlon with personal best of 6394 qualifying for the USATF Junior Championships and indoor pentathlon 3489.
