At Cornell

McCarthy was named the men's heavyweight rowing assistant coach in August of 2019.

Prior to Cornell

McCarthy joined the Cornell men’s heavyweight rowing staff in 2019 after spending the previous two years as the assistant men’s rowing coach at Saint John’s High School in in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. During the 2018-19 season, McCarthy also worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the College of the Holy Cross, coaching the third Varsity eight and serving as the head of coxing education.

McCarthy is committed to furthering his rowing education, becoming a member of Community Rowing Inc.’s Institute for Rowing Leadership, a year-long advanced certificate program designed to facilitate the learning of advanced rowing training plan design. While enrolled in the course in 2018-19, McCarthy also served as a head coach for the Community Rowing Inc., working with both the Adult Novice Sweeps and Advanced Sweeps programs.

Prior to his time in Massachusetts, McCarthy was a four year member of the men’s lightweight rowing team at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania, from 2013-17. During his time as a coxswain for the Lakers, McCarthy coxed the first Varsity eight boat at multiple regattas, including the 2015 IRA National Championships. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, McCarthy graduated from Mercyhurst University in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
