Biography

As a junior (2019-20)

• Did not compete (Spring 2020 season canceled due to COVID-19).

As a sophomore (2017-18)

• Rowed in both the varsity eight and the second varsity eight during the 2017-18 season.
• Helped the varsity eight win the Third Level Final at the 2018 IRA National Championships, placing 13th overall.
• Led the varsity eight to a third-place finish in the Petite Final at the 2018 EARC Sprints to beat its seed with a ninth place finish overall.
• Rowed in the second varsity eight during the Cup season, including a victory over Penn to help the Big Red take home the James Wray Memorial Trophy for the 11th consecutive season.

As a freshman (2016-17)

• Consistent member of the second varsity eight throughout his rookie season.
• Helped the crew take the Big Red’s best finish at the 2017 EARC Sprints, placing fifth in the Grand Final.
• Part of the second varsity eight that also took Cornell’s best finish at the 2017 IRA National Championships, placing fourth in the Petite Final and tenth overall.
• Rowed the crew to a victory over Penn.

Prior to Cornell 

• A member of the Oakland Strokes, Ortiz won a gold medal at the 2016 USRowing Youth National Championships in the men’s youth eight.
• Also earned a spot in the US U23 men’s eight that will compete at 2016 World Rowing Championships.
• Also played football, basketball and lacrosse at Campolindo High School.

Personal

• Cole Edward Ortiz is the son of Jeff and Larra Ortiz and he has one younger brother.
• Enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
