At Cornell
Newman had a solid rookie season, rowing as a member of the freshmen eight. He helped the crew to a bronze medal at the 2012 EARC Sprints and to a fourth place finish in the Grand Finals at the 2012 IRA Championship. During the regular season, the freshmen eight earned victories over Georgetown, UCSD, Syracuse, Navy, Princeton, Yale and Penn.  

Prior to Cornell
Newman competed two years in crew at Oak Park and River Forest HS, earning a silver medal at the 2010 USRowing Midwest Championships and a bronze medal at the 2011 championships, as well as a silver medal at the 2010 Canadian Henley. He was also a member of the 2010 USRowing high performance team. Newman also competed as a defender in ice hockey for 14 years, winning the Illinois youth hockey championships four times.

Personal
Riley Seavoy Newman is the son of Thomas and Michelle Newman and has one older brother. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
