Biography

• IRA All-Academic Team (2019)

As a senior (2018-19)

• Rowed in all nine regattas on the first Varsity eight boat as a senior.
• Occupied the bow for the majority of the season, including at the 2019 EARC Sprints and and 2019 IRA National Championships
• Helped the first Varsity eight place second in the Petite Final at the EARC Sprints, finishing eighth overall and fifth among Ivy schools.
• Rowed the first Varsity eight to a sixth place showing in the Petite Final at the IRA National Champioships, placing 12th overall.
• Helped the first Varsity eight boat down No. 12 Penn and Georgetown to win the Madeira Cup and lead Cornell to the James Wray Memorial Trophy.
• Rowed the first Varsity eight to a victories over Oregon State and Marist with a time of 5:48.80 at the Las Vegas Invitational.

As a junior (2017-18)

• Began the season in the fourth varsity eight before moving into the second varsity eight for the IRA National Championships.
• Helped the second varsity eight to a sixth place finish in the Petite Final at the IRAs, placing 12th overall.
• Led the third varsity eight to a second-place finish in the Petite Final at the 2018 EARC Sprints to take eighth place finish overall.
• Rowed in the fourth varsity eight during the Cup season.

As a sophomore (2016-17)
• Consistent member of the third varsity eight during his sophomore season.
• Helped the crew to a victory over Penn.
• Rowed with the third varsity eight at the 2017 EARC Sprints, taking third in the Petite Final and ninth overall.
• Also helped the crew place fifth in the Petite Final and eleventh overall at the 2017 IRA National Championships.

As a freshman (2015-16) 
• Helped the third varsity eight to victories over Syracuse and Navy in a battle for the Stagg Points Plate, before helping the second varsity eight to a win over Penn and Dartmouth for the James Wray Memorial Trophy.
• At the 2016 Eastern Sprints he helped the second varsity eight to a second place finish in the Petite Finals to take eighth place overall.
• At the IRA National Championship he rowed in the third varsity eight that also placed second in the Petite Finals for an eighth place finish.
• Rowed in the Cornell eight that advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Temple Challenge Cup at the 177th edition of the Henley Royal Regatta.

Prior to Cornell
• Earned four varsity letters in rowing at Philips Academy Andover, serving as team captain as a senior.
• He was the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Boys’ 1st Eights champion in 2012 and 2014, before a second place finish in 2015.
• Also played basketball for two seasons.
 
Personal
• Benjamin Josef Hawley is the son of Andrew and Liesl Hawley and he has two brothers and one sister.
• Enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
