At Cornell

Janet Maguire joined the Cornell softball coaching staff in January of 2017. She brings varied experiences to East Hill as a head coach, Ivy League assistant and administrator. Her softball knowledge and ability to identify and develop talent has already paid dividends for the Big Red.

The Big Red led the league in doubles and tied for the lead in home runs as one of the youngest teams in Division I in 2019. In all, 299 of the team's 427 starts were by freshmen (70 percent). Junior Bridgette Rooney was a second-team All-Ivy pick and freshmen Allison Kerce and Ashley Delany earned honorable mention status.

The Big Red continued its upward trending in 2018. Cornell finished the season with a 15-25 record, two games better than the previous year and four games ahead in conference play with its 10-11 mark. The Big Red earned fifth place after being picked last in the preseason. The Big Red's batting average increased, its ERA decreased and its fielding percentage was second-best in the Ivy League, while four players were named to the all-conference team, including first-team pick Megan Murray.

In her first season with the Big Red, the team’s win total jumped by four and it doubled its Ivy League victories. Cornell’s fielding percentage skyrocketed from .945 to .967, a mark that ranks second in a single-season in school history. A pair of players captured All-Ivy League honors as the Big Red ranked among the top half in the conference in nearly all hitting categories.

Prior Cornell

Maguire has served as head coach at Division III UMass-Boston and her alma mater, Bridgewater State, as well as posting a five-year stint as an assistant coach at Ivy rival Brown.

She was instrumental in all operations of the Brown program from 2007-12. The Bears increased its league win total in each of her first four seasons on the sidelines and posted the program's first 20-win season in four seasons and second in 13 years when the Bears were 20-22 in 2010. She assisted in the development of Stephanie Thompson, the league's career batting (.434) and on-base percentage (.515) leader and 2012 Ivy League co-Player of the Year. Thompson also graduated ranked second all-time in Ivy history in slugging percentage (.728).

As head coach at Bridgewater State, where she also served as Campus Recreation Director, Maguire guided the program to seven regular season conference championships, five conference tournament titles and five NCAA regional appearances. She was named MASCAC Coach of the Year in 2006. She accumulated a 175-122-3 (.588) record during her seven-year tenure, including 86-12 in conference play (.878).

Maguire spent the 2000 season as head coach at UMass-Boston, guiding the team to a 9-21 record after taking over a program that had gone winless the year prior. That helped the team rank among the nation's most improved squads in Division III.

Since 2012, Maguire served as Director of Parks and Recreation in Canton, Mass.

Playing Career

Maguire played softball under former Brown head coach DeeDee Enabenter-Omidiji and helped her team to a second-place finish in the 1994 NCAA Division III World Series as a second baseman and team captain.
