Salvagno did not play for Cornell during his first year with the team.

Before Cornell
Salvagno was a multi-sport star at Solvay, playing soccer for two years as a midfielder, running track for five years and playing football for one year as a cornerback and kicker. He was a varsity football captain in 2011 and earned All-League honors for his defense as a senior. He was an outdoor track captain in 2011 and 2012, a three-time sectional champion and a league champion in the 55-meter hurdles and triple jump. Salvagno also holds school records in the 55-meter hurdles, the 4x800 relay and the sprint medley relay. He was also a two-time MVP on his track team, a soccer captain in 2010 and won the Earl Hadley Sportsmanship Award given to the most outstanding athlete in his high school.

John Daniel Salvagno is the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Salvagno. He has an older brother, Richard, and a sister, Anna.
