Liu lettered once in football at East Chapel Hill high school, playing wide receiver and defensive back, and earning the Coach’s Award in 2007. He also lettered four times in track and field and played basketball for two seasons.

Sam Liu is the son of Yujun and Yujan Liu and he has two younger sisters. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
