A three-year starter on vault and floor, VanderPutten has long been one of the team’s most consistent contributors. She opened all 12 meets as a starter on vault and 11 on floor. Her season-best vault score of 9.700 came at the USAG Collegiate meet. She went between 9.625 and 9.675 in each of the team's final eight meets on floor and scored at least a 9.475 in all 12 in 2013. On vault, VanderPutten was a 9.5 or better seven times during the year with a high of 9.7 at the ECAC Championships.She was a starter on vault and floor as a freshman in 2012, ranking among the team leaders in both events. She posted a 9.6 or better on both events at the USAG Collegiate National Championships and had a season-high 9.7 on vault at ECACs and a 9.725 on floor against Penn and Brockport. She was consistent on both events throughout the season, posting a 9.5 or better on vault in her last seven meets and a 9.575 or higher on floor in her last five competitions.

Prior to Cornell
VanderPutten was a level 10 competitor for Gymnastics East, placing second in vault for the state and regional championships, as well as for the national invitational tournament in 2011.  A graduate of Mountlake Terrace HS, she was Valedictorian, a member of the National Honor Society and on the Honor Roll.

Samantha Jo VanderPutten is the daughter of Ken VanderPutten and Kathy Koehler and has a brother and a sister.
