Biography

Why Krakauer Chose Cornell: Cornell is one of the top research institutions in the world, and I knew that it was the best place for me after meeting the members of the crew team and seeing the campus. The girls on the team and the coaches were very passionate about rowing and welcomed me immediately. Although the fall isn't the primary rowing season, I could see that the team was working very hard to get ahead of the competition early on. My feeling of belonging was confirmed when I sat among Cornell students in a nutrition class during my official visit in the fall. The College of Human Ecology strongly reflected what I was looking for in my undergraduate education. I want to major in Human Biology, Health, and Society because I would get to continue taking humanities courses in addition to science classes; I believe that there is value in a more well-rounded education. Additionally, the opportunity to work with professors is invaluable because I want to help other people, and finding new perspectives on research will aid me in fulfilling that ambition. I hope to attend medical school after I graduate, so the opportunity to work off-campus in my junior year would prepare me for the professional world. I understand that working in the 'real world' is very different from studying concepts in a textbook, and I would take advantage of the numerous opportunities to work with experienced adults who could help me reach my goals. The College of Human Ecology will provide a foundation of knowledge for my work at Cornell and in future academic environments. The rigor of the academic program will allow me to continue challenging myself throughout my college and professional career.
