Biography
Why Watkin Chose Cornell: I loved the sense of community within the rowing team and was impressed by the breadth of academic opportunities at Cornell. It was the perfect fit from the start.
At Cornell
Sophomore (2015-16): In her junior season, Watkin coxed the varsity four A. She helped the crew to a victory over Penn and UMass at the Doc Hosea Invitational Regatta, as well as an open-water victory over Boston University in a race at Brown. Following the season, Watkin was named a CRCA National Scholar Athlete.
Freshman (2014-15): As a freshman, Watkin served as coxswain of the varsity four crew that finished fifth to beat its seeding at the 2014 Ivy League Women’s Rowing Championship.
Prior to Cornell
Watkin earned three varsity letters as a coxswain at New Trier high school, where she was named to the USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll during her senior season. She helped her crew to a fifth-place finish in the lightweight eight at the Scholastic Nationals in both 2011 and 2012. Watkin’s lightweight eight also took third at the 2011 Youth Nationals.
Personal
Rachel Louisa Watkin is the daughter of William Watkin and Alexandra Han and she has one younger sister. She is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
