Former Cornell women’s basketball standout Gretchen Gregg ’08 has returned to East Hill to join head coach Dayna Smith’s staff for the upcoming 2010-11 season. Gregg brings two years of coaching experience, as well as an unparalleled passion for Cornell, with her to her new position.
Gregg comes to Cornell following two very successful seasons with the Lehigh women’s basketball program, where she served as a graduate assistant. During her time in Bethlehem, the Mountain Hawks won back-to-back Patriot League championships, advanced to two straight NCAA tournaments, and set a new school and Patriot League record for wins (29) during the 2009-10 season. Under her tutelage, Erica Prosser was named first-team All-Patriot League, while Alex Ross was named second-team, as well as the Patriot League tournament MVP.
Working primarily with the team’s guards, Gregg helped Lehigh to put up impressive 3-point shooting numbers in the 2008-09 campaign, leading the Patriot League with a .346 percentage from downtown and making 5.9 3-pointers per game. Lehigh broke the school record for 3-pointers made in a season, with 196, and Alex Ross broke her own school record by sinking 93 triples on the year.
As a player at Cornell, Gregg capped a successful career by helping the Big Red to its first-ever Ivy League Championship and the program’s first berth to the NCAA Tournament.
A four-year letter winner, she played an instrumental role in the success of this 2007-08 women’s basketball team, starting every game that season and leading the team in scoring on four occasions. She ranked among the best in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage that entire season and finished the year ranked eighth in county, connecting on 43.4 percent. She finished her career ranked third in Cornell history for 3-pointers in a single season with 59 and ranked fifth overall in Big Red history with 110 career 3-pointers. She finished her senior season ranked third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.6 points per game, and finished her career with more than 500 points and 300 rebounds.
Gregg worked numerous camps throughout her collegiate days, and also gained experience as an intern in the Cornell Student Services Office and as a Teaching Assistant. She graduated from Cornell in 2008 with a degree in applied economics and management, before earning a master’s of elementary education from Lehigh in 2010.
