Biography
Senior Season — 2016-17
Francis served as one of the team's co-captains while battling through injury. She was unable to compete in any scoring matches.
Junior Season — 2015-16
Francis was 8-4 on the season, and her .667 winning percentage was highest among competitors to appear in more than half of the team's matches. She was slotted into the bottom third of the order, competing at positions 7, 8 and 9. She had a five-matches winning streak in January, including Ivy League victories against opponents from Brown and Columbia. At the team's postseason banquet, Francis was named a co-captain for the 2016-17 season.
Sophomore Season — 2014-15
Francis appeared twice at the No. 9 position, winning convincingly both times. She yielded just six points in a three-set sweep of Drexel's Courtney Sabo on Jan. 24, then cruised to another three-set victory on Feb. 8 against William Smith's Peyton Capute.
Freshman Season — 2013-14
Francis boasted the team's best winning percentage after going 6-1 from the bottom portion of the order in part-time action. All six of her victories came consecutively to begin her season, with five being decided in the minimum three games. Francis was 2-1 in Ivy League play, including sweeps of Columbia's Monica Stone from the No. 8 spot on Dec. 7 and Brown's Isabel Pitaro from the No. 9 position on Jan. 11.
Prior to Cornell
Francis arrived ranked 42nd in the country for girls 19 years old or younger. She competed for a strong program at Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, Pa. Francis helped the team place fourth at the high school nationals in 2012, and they were a four-time finalist in the Mid-Atlantic Squash Association championship, capturing one title in 2010. Individually, she won Episcopal Academy’s Heckscher Bowl award for the 2012-13 season and was a two-time winner of the squad’s 1989 Girls’ Squash Cup.
Personal
Sydney Mills Massie Francis is the daughter of James (Wicker) Francis and Sally Francis, and she has an older brother. She is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
