At Cornell
Backel was among the Big Red's top sprint talents as a junior. Setting a number of personal bests indoors, she just missed making the finals at the Indoor Heptagonal Championships. Outdoors, she continued her development, running the lead-off leg on the Big Red's 4x400m relay that captured both the Penn Relays and the Heptagonal Championships. She was an ECAC and NCAA East Regional qualifier and has won two league titles in her three years. She excels on relays and has made huge strides in her individual events, finishing fourth at 400m at the Outdoor Heps.
Before Cornell
Backel was a finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman and competed at the Nike Outdoor Nationals as part of her school’s distance medley relay. She also participated in field hockey at Conard and was a regular scorer in her state track and field championships in the long sprints.
Personal
Katherine A. Backel is the daughter of Robert Backel and Katherine Grant. She is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
