As a Senior (2012-13)
O'Brien will served as a team captain during her senior year, and she ran a strong indoor season. O'Brien was 11th in the Indoor Heps 400-meter race and was the first leg of the Big Red's 4x400 relay at the Indoor ECACs. O'Brien also set a new personal best in the 300 during the season, running it in 41.21 in the Deneault Invite in February.

As a Junior (2011-12)
O'Brien played a large role on the Big Red squad in her junior year, and she took 11th place in the 400 prelims at the Indoor Heps. But after that, O'Brien was part of a thrilling conclusion to the home meet where she ran the third leg of the winning 4x400 relay team, a team that beat Princeton by almost a full second. O'Brien was also on the third-place 4x400 team at the Indoor ECACs, and she was again on a third-place 4x400 in the Heps relay at the Penn Relays. Outdoors, O'Brien ran the first leg of the winning 4x400 team, claiming her second Heps title in two months.

Before Cornell
O'Brien was a four-time state finalist in the 400m in Illinois and earned a state title as part of her school's 4x400m relay while also finishing as runner-up with the 4x100m relay. She recorded a total of seven all-state finishes over her career and holds eight varsity records. A four-time team most valuable performer, she was also a two-time team captain. O'Brien also played soccer, earning a spot on the Illinois Olympic Development Program state team in 2008-09.

Personal
Elizabeth O'Brien is the daughter of Tim and Patti O'Brien and has an older brother and a younger sister. Her father competed in track and field for four years at Northwestern. She is enrolled in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
