At Belen Jesuit Preparatory School
Cancela was a four-year letter winner at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, where he helped his team to back-to-back state runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2008. He served as team captain during his senior season. As a rookie, Cancela won a state championship in the freshman-4.

Carlos Miguel Cancela is the son of Jose and Rosy Cancela and he has one older sister. He is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
