As a junior (2018-19)

• Was 3-2 on the season, winning a pair of matches with bonus points.
• Competed at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Classic, earning wins over EIWA foes from Columbia, Bucknell and Navy.
• Earned wins by fall and major decision in the tournament.
 

As a sophomore (2017-18)

• Posted a 9-5 record, placing at two tournaments.
• Went 5-1 at the New York State Intercollegiates to place fifth overall at 149 pounds.
• Took fourth at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Open.
• Also wrestled at the Binghamton Open.
• Four of his victories were bonus point wins.
 

As a freshman (2016-17)

• Posted a 12-6 record at 149 pounds with three wins by fall and three more by technical fall.
• Was the runner-up in the Open Division of the New York State Intercollegiates, dropping a one-point decision to All-Ivy teammate Jonathan Furnas in the finals.
• Captured third at the Brockport Open.
• Was 5-2 at the Edinboro Open, bouncing back from a first round loss for five straight victories.
• Also wrestled at the Binghamton Open.
 

Prior to Cornell

• Won a regional title as a senior at Jackson Liberty HS.
• Posted a 128-25 career record, including a 41-2 mark as a senior.
• Elected team captain in his final season.
• Was a two-time Team All-American while competing for the Shore Thing Wrestling Club.
 

Personal

• Matthew M. Russo is the son of Michael Jr. and Frances Russo and has an older sister and twin brother, Mike, who is also a member of the Big Red wrestling team.
• He is enrolled in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
