Cornell University Athletics

As a junior (2016-17)
• Went 6-6 at 165 pounds, including placing at two open tournaments.
• Captured third place the Golden Eagle Open and finished as runner-up in the Open Division of the New York State Intercollegiate championships, going 3-1.

As a sophomore (2015-16)
• Russo was 3-9 on the year while competing at 157 pounds in four open tournaments.
• Finished on the podium with an eighth-place effort in the B Division of the New York State Intercollegiates.
• Picked up wins over wrestlers from RIT and Brockport at the New York State meet.

As a freshman (2014-15)
• Russo went 1-6 in his first season for the Big Red, competing in three open tournaments.
• Picked up his first collegiate victory with a 7-4 decision over Ryan Marriott of Alfred State at the New York State Intercollegiates at 165 pounds.
• Also saw action at the Binghamton Open and the Lock Haven Mat Town Open.

Prior to Cornell
• Russo was a two-time New York state prep champion at Horace Mann School.
• The three-time state placewinner, he was named the state prep school's Most Outstanding Wrestler as a senior co-captain.
• Russo was a two-time national prep qualifier who reached the round of 12 in his final season.
• He closed his senior season with a 47-3 record to raise his career mark to 110-23.
• A three-sport athlete, he also competed in soccer and baseball.

Personal
• Matthew David Russo is the son of David Russo and Mary Gail Gearns and has an older sister.
• His father, mother and sister all attended Cornell.
• He is enrolled in the College of Engineering.
