AT CORNELL
Phipps joined the Big Red track and field staff as an assistant coach of throws in September 2016. Throughout Phipps' years as an assistant coach of throws at Cornell, he has coached numerous athletes to top-10 throws on the Cornell career record list.

In his first year with the Big Red, Phipps assisted in coaching Rudy Winkler '17 to his final two Ivy League titles in hammer throw and weight throw. Following the Ivy titles, Winkler became a First-Team All-American for his national performance in the weight throw before closing his collegiate career as the 2017 NCAA Hammer Throw Champion. His second season saw Michaela Smith '18 achieve her first and second Ivy League wins in the shot put (both indoor and outdoor) as well as the outdoor shot put record.

Big Red throwing record holders under Coach Phipps:

Leena Morris '19 holds a placement on the indoor shot put, weight throw, hammer throw, and outdoor shot put top-10 lists. She notched the record in all but the indoor shot put, in which she has the third-best throw.

Taylor Baker '18, Taylor Drayton '18, Nikolia Kanaris '20, and Micheala Smith '18 each have two top-10 throws. Drayton, Kanaris and Smith are on the list for the indoor and outdoor shot put while Baker's are in the weight throw and hammer throw.

Autumn Covington '19 (hammer throw) and Beatrice Juskeviciute '22 (javelin) hold the final two top-10 throws coached by Phipps.

A freshman during Phipps' first year at Cornell, he coached Zach Hawley '20 to his top-10 shot put throw and Zeke Cohen '21 to a top-five hammer throw in 2019.

Nikolia Kanaris '20 (indoor shot put) and Ian Frost (rising junior) (hammer throw) achieved freshman records under Coach Phipps' training.

PRIOR TO CORNELL
Phipps came to Cornell after five years as an assistant coach at Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, where he coached throws, pole vault and multi-events and was named the 2016 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association DIII Women's National Assistant Coach of the Year.

Phipps helped the Baldwin-Wallace women's indoor team to the 2016 NCAA DIII national championship and the women's outdoor team was the national runner-up. Phipps worked with thrower Kim Gallavan, who earned 20 of the YellowJackets' 42.2 points at the national indoor meet and won individual national titles in the weight throw and shot put. The women's indoor squad was also named the USTFCCCA 2016 Women's Indoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year.

On the men's side Phipps coached Tyler Burdorff to NCAA runner-up status in the weight and hammer throws and helped him garner USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year honors. He also mentored Mitch Suppan who was a three-time NCAA All-American in the shot, discus and hammer.

Overall, Phipps coached three national champions, 11 All-Americans, 36 NCAA national championship meet qualifiers, 16 Ohio Athletic Conference champions and six school record holders. He was also the 2012 USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

COMPETITION CAREER
Before his coaching days, Phipps was a successful athlete himself at his alma mater. He was a six-time DIII All-American and was a seven-time Ohio Athletic Conference champion and earned all-conference honors 12 times. He also played four years of varsity football for the YellowJackets and captained the team as a senior. He earned all-conference honors as a defensive tackle.

PERSONAL
The Pataskala, Ohio native earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Baldwin-Wallace in 2011. He is also a USTFCCCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach and a USATF Level 1 Certified Coach.
