Cambridge Cruises to Victory Over Lightweight Rowing at Henley Royal Regatta

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England — The Cornell men's lightweight 4+ crew fell to the University of Cambridge in the quarterfinals of the Prince Albert Challenge Cup at the 2024 Royal Henley Regatta on Thursday afternoon on the River Thames.

With the second-place finish in the race, Cornell was eliminated from advancing to the next round in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup.

Despite both teams rowing at the same pace over the first couple hundred meters, Cambridge used a strong push to take an open-water lead by the 600-meter mark, which continued to increase for the remainder of the race.

Year Breakdown
1949 Despite winning the American lightweight championship and defeating Princeton twice during the season, Cornell was refused entry into the Royal Henley Regatta's Thames Cup race because its entry form was received one day late.
1961 The Big Red lightweight crew makes its first Henley appearance, competing for the Thames Cup. In the opening round, Cornell defeated the Tideway Scullers School of London, one of the best British crews at the event. In the second round, the Big Red fell to Eliot House of Harvard, a crew that outweighed Cornell by eight pounds per man.
1963 In the trial heats of Henley, Cornell went 2-1, defeating Queen's University of Belfast and the Kingston Rowing Club before falling in the third heat to Queen's College of Cambridge.
1965 The Big Red went 3-1 in trial heats, defeating Thames Rowing Club, Northeastern University, and the Derby Rowing Club of England before falling to Nottingham Britannia Club of England in the semifinals. 
1967 Cornell claims the Thames Challenge Cup by defeating Nottingham Union Rowing Club in the finals. Along the way, the Big Red also defeated Kingston Rowing Club, Durham University, Crowland Rowing Club, and Molesey Boat Club.
1968 The Big Red makes it back to the finals of the Thames Challenge Cup after defeating Harvard, the Quintin Boat Club, and the Siochana Boat Club of Ireland. In the final race, Cornell lost to Leander Boat Club.
1992 For the first time in nearly a quarter century, the Big Red returns to Henley and makes its final appearance in the Thames Challenge Cup. Cornell received a first-round bye before defeating Thames Rowing Club and Rob Roy Rowing Club. Unfortunately, the Big Red fell in the quarterfinals to Upper Thames Rowing Club.
2005 Cornell defeated the University College of Dublin by one and three-fourth lengths after beating Abingdon School of England by one length in the first round. The Big Red saw its quest for the Temple Challenge Cup come to an end when it fell to Oxford Brookes University in the quarterfinals.
2006 The Big Red defeats Pembroke and Christ Church of Oxford in the first round and advanced to the round of 16 by beating Imperial College of London. Cornell advanced to the finals after beating Cal, but for the second year in a row, fell to Oxford Brookes University.
2007 For the second straight year, the Big Red placed second at Henley, falling to Cal in the final race of the Temple Challenge Cup. Cornell earned the trip to the finals after defeating Durham University, Bath University, University of Bristol, and Colgate.
2008 The Big Red defeated D.S.R. Proteus-Eretes (Netherlands) and Imperial College of London in the opening rounds of the Temple Challenge Cup before falling to an impressive Stanford freshman heavyweight crew in the semifinals.
2014 At the 175th Henley Royal Regatta, Cornell easily won its first three races before falling to Oxford Brookes University by a half-length in the Temple Challenge Cup semifinals.
2015 The Big Red saw its season come to an end in the semifinals of the Temple Challenge Cup, falling to an extremely talented A.S.R. Nereus (Netherlands) crew that established a new course record in the previous day's quarterfinals. In the opening round, Cornell defeated the Oxford Brookes University's 'B' crew and then defeated Trinity College of Dublin the following day by two-thirds length. A two-thirds of a length victory over University of London's 'A' crew in the quarterfinals solidified Cornell's spot in the semifinals.
2016 The lightweight 8+ earned a victory in the opening round of the Temple Challenge Cup at the 177th edition of the Henley Royal Regatta by defeating the Oxford Brookes University's 'C' boat by nearly three-fourths of a length, before falling to the University of London 'A' crew in the second round.
2017 Cornell's lightweight crew defeated Exeter University in the opening heat of the Temple Challenge Cup before going on to defeat the University of London's 'B' crew in the second round. The Big Red ultimately fell to the University of London's 'A' crew in the quarterfinals. The Big Red's lightweight developmental boat fell to one of the favorites, A.S.R. Nereus (Netherlands) in the opening heat of the Prince Albert Challenge Cup.
2019 Racing in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup, the Cornell men's lightweight crew fell to the Harvard heavyweight crew in the qualifying round.
2024 After qualifying a 4+ and 8+ crew, Cornell fell in both of its first races in the Temple and Prince Albert Challenge Cups. The Big Red lost by two-thirds of a length to the University of London in the Temple Challenge Cup and the University of Cambridge easily defeated Cornell in the quarterfinals of the Prince Albert Challenge Cup.
