Big Red Advances Seven Wrestlers to the Quarterfinals at the Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C.—
The Big Red wrestling team finished day one of the Southern Scuffle in third place with 43.5 points, just one point behind the leaders Cal St. Bakersfield. Cornell has advanced seven wrestlers to the quarterfinals that will be wrestled on Tuesday morning. 

Cornell did not compete at 125 pounds and opened the day with sophomore Mike Grey moving down to the 133 pound weight class for the first time this season. Grey advanced to the quarterfinals after winning his first two matches of the day by technical falls. He will face Ohio's Quentin Keyes on Tuesday morning.

Sophomore Corey Manson returned to the mat for the first time for Cornell since the 2006-07 season at 141 pounds. Manson won his first match by injury default and followed with a 12-4 major decision over David Ivashchenko (Citadel). Manson will wrestle Virginia Tech's Chris Diaz in the quarterfinals.

At 149 pounds, DJ Meagher picked up a 10-2 major decision over George Hickman of Bloomsburg before wrestling past PJ Gillespie of Hofstra, 4-0. In his third match, he pinned Boston's Andrew Swank in 1:17. Meagher will take on NC State's Darrion Caldwell in the quarterfinals. Also at 149 pounds, Brian Alves lost his opening bout, but came back to win his next three. He will wrestle in the wrestlebacks on Tuesday.

At 157 pounds, John Basting lost his opening match, but followed with a win by major decision. He will take on Jesse Dong of Virginia Tech in the wrestlebacks.

Sophomore Mack Lewnes won two matches by major decisions to advance to the quarterfinals at 165 pounds. He will face North Carolina's Kyle Kiss on Tuesday.

At 174 pounds, senior Steve Anceravage won a 7-1 decision over Kent State's Chris Estep and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3 decision over West Virginia's Chance Litton. He will next face North Carolina's Ben Fiacco.

Sophomore Justin Kerber had a solid start at 184 pounds, opening by pinning Kyle Higgins (Campbell) in 2:22. He won by tech fall, 19-3, over Craig McIntosh of UNC-Greensboro to advance to the quarterfinals. He will wrestle Shawn Fendone of Edinboro on Tuesday.

At 197 pounds, Josh Arnone and Cam Simaz wrestled for the Big Red. Arnone took the mats for the first time this season and opened with a 6-1 win over Navy's Phil Neese. He will wrestle Virginia's Brent Jones in the quarterfinals after defeating Bloomsburg's Eric Shaw by a 12-0 major decision. Simaz defeated Boston's John Hall, 10-5, but narrowly lost, 4-3, to Lock Haven's Ben Hepborn. In the wrestle backs, he defeated Neese 10-4. He will next face Ohio's Chris Iammarino.

Senior Zach Hammond won a 15-3 major decision over Appalachian State's Dustin Heiser at heavyweight. He moved to the wrestle backs after losing a 4-3 narrow decision in overtime to Lock Haven's David Marone. Hammond quickly bounced back to pin Davidson's Charlie Wolff in 2:10. He will wrestle Ziad Haddad of North Carolina on Tuesday morning.

Matches begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
