No. 12 Missouri Slips Past No. 2 Big Red Wrestling, 18-14

ITHACA, N.Y.—
The No. 12 nationally ranked Missouri wrestling team slipped past the Big Red 18-14 on Sunday afternoon in Newman Arena. Cornell won four out of five matches in the first half of the dual to jump out to a 14-3 lead, but the Tigers shutout the Big Red in the second half the mount the comeback victory. Cornell moves to 5-2 for the season, while Missouri improved to 15-2. The match was televised live by Time Warner Cable and can be seen throughout the week on tape delay. The match opened at 125 pounds, with No. 2 ranked, All-American Troy Nickerson facing Troy Dolan. Nickerson notched the first points of the match at 1:23 of the first period with a takedown. The Big Red wrestler worked to move Dolan towards his back and with 11 seconds left on the clock, tilted the Missouri grappler to earn a three-point near fall. With time running out on the clock, Nickerson earned two more back points as time expired. Nickerson started the second period on top and with three more near falls, won a 16-0 tech fall in 3:54.

At 133 pounds, sophomore Mike Grey took on Todd Schavrien of Missouri. Grey earned two takedowns in the first period, but with time running out Schavrien notched a reversal to bring the score to 4-3. Grey chose to start the second period in the down position, and the Mizzou wrestler took a 4-5 lead with two quick back points. With 45 seconds left on the clock, Grey escaped to tie the match at 5-5. The Big Red wrestler grabbed a 7-5 advantage with 15 seconds left in the period. Schavrien tied the match once again with a reversal from his opening down position with only five seconds off the clock. The Missouri wrestler was hit with two technical violations for locking hands, and Grey reversed him putting the scored at 11-7. With 1:07 left in the match, Schavrien escaped and 11 seconds later earned a takedown to come within a point. Grey quickly escaped to seal a 12-10 victory.

Sophomore Corey Manson faced off against No. 12 Marcus Hoehn at 141 pounds. With 1:22 left in the first period, Manson took a shot at Hoehn, but the Missouri wrestler countered and with a spin earned a takedown. Manson earned his first point with an escape. With time running out, Hoehn earned another takedown, but Manson grabbed two points back quickly with a reversal with time running out. Hoehn earned the only point of the second period with an escape from his opening down position. Manson chose down in the third period, but Hoehn held tight to rack up the riding time. Manson was awarded a point after Hoehn was hit for stalling, but with riding time locked up, Hoehn won a 6-4 decision.

At 149 pounds, sophomore DJ Meagher faced Andrew Sherry. Meagher opened with a takedown with 2:10 left in the period, but 40 seconds later Sherry earned the reversal. Sherry grabbed two quick back points, before Meagher reversed him and earned two back points of his own to take a 6-4 advantage into the second period. Sherry chose to start the second period down on the mat, Meagher grabbed two more back points four seconds into the period in what would be the only scoring of the period. Meagher chose to start the second period on top, and with less than 30 seconds off the clock each wrestler earned a reversal. Sherry notched two more points with caution penalties to Meagher, before notching a reversal to tie the match at 10-10. With 3:18 in riding time, Meagher inched by with an 11-10 win.

In the last match before the halftime break, returning NCAA champion Jordan Leen faced No. 9 Michael Chandler. The two wrestlers were scrambling back and forth throughout most of the first period, but Leen worked his way to a takedown with 17 seconds left on the clock and rode Chandler out until the buzzer. Chandler chose bottom to start the second, but Leen rode the Missouri wrestler out for the entire period. Leen started the third period down on the mat, and with only 17 seconds off the clock earned the escape. The Big Red wrestler shot in on a low single, but Chandler countered and fought his way to a takedown. Eleven seconds later, Leen escaped and with riding time, won a 5-2 decision to give Cornell a 14-3 lead going into the second half. 

After a halftime break, the match resumed at 165 pounds with Cornell's John Basting taking on No. 7 Nick Marable. The two were scoreless after the first period, and Basting earned the only point of the second with an escape. Marable escaped from his starting down position in the third period, and took a 2-1 lead after Basting was hit with his second stalling warning. With five seconds left in the bout, Marable earned a takedown to win a 4-1 decision.

No. 5 ranked Steve Anceravage faced No. 6 Ray Jordan of Missouri in the 174 pound match. Jordan took a 2-1 lead into the second period after earning a takedown, from which Anceravage escaped. Jordan started the second period down on the mat and quickly took a 4-1 lead with a reversal. The Missouri wrestler grabbed two more points with a nearfall with 49 seconds left in the period. Anceravage chose to start the third period down and with only four seconds off the clock escaped. Anceravage earned his first takedown of the match, but Jordan grabbed back the points with a reversal. Anceravage escaped, but with 15 seconds left in the bout, Jordan notched another takedown. With 2:20 in riding time, Jordan won a 10-5 decision.

At 184 pounds, the Big Red's No. 16 ranked Justin Kerber squared off against Dorian Henderson of Missouri. The two were scoreless in the first period, and Henderson notched the only point of the second with an escape. Kerber chose to start the third down and with three seconds off the clock escaped. The two were tied at 1-1 until 15 seconds left in the bout when Henderson earned a takedown. Kerber quickly escaped, but Henderson walked away with a 3-2 decision to put the team score at Cornell 14, Missouri 12. 

No. 18 ranked freshman Cam Simaz faced No. 4 Max Askren in the 197 pound weight class. Asken took a two point lead with a takedown at 2:05. With seven seconds left in the period, Simaz came within one with an escape. Askren earned the only point of the second period with an escape from his starting down position. Simaz came within a point when he escaped to start the third period. With 15 seconds left in the match, the two wrestlers were tied at 3-3 after Askren was hit with his second stalling warning, but with 2:03 in riding time Askren won a 4-3 decision to give Missouri a one point lead.

In the final bout of the day, No. 13 Zach Hammond faced Missouri's Dominique Bradley. The two were scoreless in the first period, and Bradley rode Hammond for the entire second period. Bradley escaped quickly from his starting down position in the third and with 1:56 in riding time, won a 2-0 decision. The final three points gave Missouri an 18-14 victory.

The Big Red will hit the road next weekend to take on Tennessee-Chattanooga. Cornell will travel to the home state of senior Jordan Leen and sophomore Corey Manson for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Feb. 1.
