ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell men's hockey forward
Colin Greening has been selected as a candidate for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, announced Wednesday. Greening is among 20 national candidates for the award, which focuses on four areas of excellence - character, classroom, community and competition.
From the initial list of 20 candidates released today, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the award in late January. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote running from Feb. 5 through March 19. Fan balloting will be combined with votes from coaches and media to determine the winner, which will be announced in early April.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Greening, a seventh-round draft pick of the Ottawa Senators in the 2005 NHL Draft, was named an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Second-Team Academic All-America following his junior season in which he finished second on the Big Red in scoring. After serving as co-captain last season, he will be Cornell's lone captain this season as the Big Red tries for its 12th ECAC Hockey championship.
