Equestrian Places Second At Morrisville Show

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's equestrian team moved back into second place in the region with a second-place team effort at the Morrisville Show on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red scored 38 team points to finish one point out of first place, held by Skidmore. It was the Big Red's highest team placement of the year and the most points scored in any of the team's three shows. In addition, four Big Red riders are now qualified for regionals after just three shows.

The day started the day with senior Brooke Cagwin with a good quick ride to a third-place finish. Junior captain Georgina Melbye rode to  a great first-place finish, while senior classmates Heather Sherman, another of the team captains, and Nicole Finazzo rode to third and second finishes in their classes, respectively.

Intermediate Fences were next to go with junior Kelsey Craig riding to a second-place finish, while freshman classmates Alexa Bruer and Emily Webster did not place but rode well and gained good experience. Bruer was riding in her first IHSA show.

Novice Fences followed with Katie Fink and Caroline Rusk both riding great to a win in their classes, while Sam Duxbury rode well to a third-place finish. The win qualified Fink for the regional championships.

Open Flat was up next after a short break, with Cagwin back to ride to another third-place finish while classmate Zoe Samuel rode to a strong fourth-place and Melbye to a good third place.

Craig was next to ride first place and junior Mary Winans also rode to strong first place in her class.

Rusk competed in novice to the tune of a third-place finish, with freshman Emily Kowalchik posting a good second-place showing and classmate Erika Hooker, in her first IHSA show, rode to third.

Advanced walk-trot-canter was next to go with junior Elizabeth Briggs placing second and Ji-Min Kim placing first to move her up to the advanced walk-trot-canter competitions. The team's walk-trotters finished the day and did so in style with sophomores Carolyn Tsai and Charmaine Tan ridingf very well to a second and third respectively.
