ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell University Department of Athletics and Physical Education mourns the death of student-athlete Adam Frey '11, who passed away on Saturday after a a nearly two-year long battle with cancer. The two-time NCAA wrestling qualifier was 23 years old.
As a freshman in 2006-07, Frey made a big splash on the national scene, posting a 17-4 overall record and earning Ivy League Rookie of the Year and second-team All-Ivy. He opened his career with a win at the Southern Scuffle, then later placed second at the EIWA tournament to the defending NCAA champion, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. As a sophomore, Frey was again an NCAA qualifier after going 4-1 and placing third at the EIWA meet. After the season, Frey was in a car accident, and routine testing done after the crash for internal injuries showed signs of cancer.
Despite the diagnosis, Frey started his own radio show, created his own cancer research foundation and continued to attend Big Red wrestling matches. His blog at www.adamfrey.us was seen as an honest and brave portrayal of a young man battling the ups and downs of fighting cancer. He did so bravely until his passing.
Prior to Cornell, Frey was ranked as the nation's top recruit at 130 pounds, winning four varsity letters at Blair Academy at 112 and 130 pounds. He was the member of four national championsip teams and was an individual national champion as a senior. He was a two-time national prep champion. Frey was also a five-time freestyle and Greco-Roman All-American, and in 2005, he was a freestyle and Greco-Roman national champion.
Frey is survived by his parents, Jerry and Cynthia, and a younger brother, Garrett, who wrestles at Princeton.
