ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell sophomore goalkeepers Megan Bartlett and Kelly Murphy were named co-most valuable players for the 2009 women's soccer team, announced on Wednesday night by head coach Danielle LaRoche at the team's annual end-of-season banquet.
While the record may not reflect it, the 2009 season was a year of vast improvement for the Big Red, as Cornell allowed 10 fewer goals than in 2008. That drop was due in large part to the development of both Bartlett and Murphy, who posted significant improvements in their games in their second seasons.
Both players saw their playing time nearly double from their freshman seasons, and both saw their goals-against average drop substantially. Murphy's fell from 2.23 as a freshman to 1.49 as a sophomore, while Bartlett's fell from 3.11 in her first season to 1.93 in 2009. Both players finished ranked in the top-10 in the Ivy League in goals-against average, save percentage and total saves, while Bartlett led the league in saves made per game.
