Wrestling Earns Seventh-Straight Ivy League Title with 34-9 Win over Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Big Red wrestling team won its seventh-straight Ivy League title on Saturday afternoon with a 34-9 victory over Harvard. Sophomore Mack Lewnes won by fall at 165 pounds and Corey Manson won by technical fall, while Cornell received wins by forfeit at 125 and 197 pounds. The Big Red wraps up its dual season with a 12-2 record and is a perfect 5-0 against the Ancient Eight.

The Big Red took a quick 6-0 team lead when Harvard forfeited at 125 pounds to No. 1 ranked Troy Nickerson.

At 133 pounds, No. 11 Mike Grey took on the Crimson's Tommy Picarsic. Grey grabbed a takedown with only 10 seconds off the clock to take a 2-0 lead. The Big Red wrestler took a 2-1 lead into the second period with Picarsic's point coming from an escape. Grey chose to start the second period down on the mat and quickly turned out for an escape, and he took a 5-2 lead into the third with another takedown. Grey racked up three takedowns in the third and narrowly missed winning by major decision with a 13-6 victory.

Manson wrestled Johnny Mately at 141 pounds. Manson grabbed four takedowns in the first period, and continued with two more in the second. The Big Red wrestler cut Mately loose to start the third and throughout the period recorded five more takedowns. With 3:58 in riding time, Manson won by technical fall in 25-10. Cornell only earned four team points because no back points were awarded.

At 149 pounds, sophomore DJ Meagher faced off against Walter Peppelman. Meagher took a quick 2-0 lead in the first period with a takedown at 2:15 and rode his opponent until time ran out. Peppelman chose to start the second period on top and Meagher was unable to escape. Meagher chose to start the third period down on the mat and earned a point with an escape with 15 seconds left on the clock. Peppelman earned his only point with 1:39 in riding time, and Meagher won three teams points with a 3-1 decision. Cornell took a 16-0 lead into the next bout.

No. 5 ranked JP O'Connor matched up against Cornell freshman Derek Schreiner at 157 pounds. O'Connor earned the only points of the first with a takedown. O'Connor took another point with an opening escape in the second and had a 5-0 lead going into the third with a takedown. The Crimson wrestler cut Schreiner loose with 25 seconds left on the clock. With 3:44 in riding time, O'Connor won a 6-1 decision.

Top ranked Mack Lewnes quickly took a 2-0 lead at 165 pounds over Michael Sadler with a takedown with only 10 seconds off the clock. The Big Red sophomore turned his opponent towards his back and worked until he pinned him in 1:50. Cornell lengthened its advantage to 22-3.

At 174 pounds, No. 7 Steve Anceravage faced Andy Olsen. Anceravage earned two points with a takedown in the first period. The Big Red wrestler chose to start the second at neutral and grabbed another takedown. Olsen chose to start the third down on the mat and Anceravage cut him loose on the opening whistle. With a minute left, Anceravage earned another takedown. Olsen notched two points with an escape and a penalty to the Big Red grappler. With two more takedowns and 3:17 in riding time, Anceravage won an 11-4 decision.

The Big Red and Harvard exchanged six team points apiece at the 184 and 197 with forfeits. Louis Caputo received the win for the Crimson at 184 pounds, while freshman Cam Simaz took the victory at 197. Heading into the heavyweight match, Cornell led Harvard, 31-9.

In the last bout of the day, senior Zach Hammond faced off against Andrew Knapp. The two were scoreless after the first period, and Hammond did not let Knapp escape from his starting down position for the entire second. Hammond quickly escaped to start the third period to score the bout's first point. Midway through the third Hammond countered a shot by Knapp and was awarded with a takedown. He cut his opponent loose and earned another takedown. With 2:13 in riding time, Hammond won a 6-1 decision.

Cornell will resume action March 7-8 when it will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for the EIWA Championships.
