Evan Barlow scored a pair of goals for the second straight night as the Cornell men's hockey team picked up a 4-3 victory over Rensselaer on Sunday night, punching the Big Red's ticket into the semifinals of the ECAC Hockey playoffs. The Big Red wins the best-of-three series against the Engineers, two games to one, and will face Princeton on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y.
Keir Ross and
Michael Kennedy both added a goal for the Big Red (20-8-4), which rallied to win the next two games of the series after dropping the first game on Friday night, 1-0.
Patrick Kennedy added a pair of assists while
Riley Nash had three helpers for the Big Red.
Brendon Nash and
Locke Jillson both added a single assist on the night. For Rensselaer, Matt Angers-Goulet, Scott Halpern and Jeff Foss each tallied a goal, while Foss had a two-point night by assisting on Angers-Goulet's second-period goal.
Cornell netminder
Ben Scrivens stopped 31 shots for the victory, his 20th of the season. Allen York took the loss for Rensselaer, making 22 saves on the night. Cornell went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Rensselaer went scoreless in its three power-play attempts to finish the series 0-for-11 on the man advantage.
Cornell got on the board at the 17:05 mark of the first period with Barlow scoring his third goal of the weekend, ripping a shot past York to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. Rensselaer evened things up midway through the second period, as Foss batted a puck out of the air to the stick of Angers-Goulet, who went down the ice and fired a shot past Scrivens for a short-handed tally. Cornell responded 42 seconds later with Barlow firing a rocket of a shot on the power play to put Cornell ahead to stay.
Just over two minutes later,
Keir Ross followed up a rebound off a
Riley Nash shot, charging in from the left point to shovel the rebound over the shoulder of York. A minute and a half later, it was
Michael Kennedy tallying his first goal of the night, tapping home a shot at the back-side from
Locke Jillson to put Cornell ahead, 4-3.
Rensselaer cut the gap, as Halpern added his first goal of the season at the 5:16 mark of the third period, and Foss scored with 56.1 seconds to play as the Engineers had the extra attacker on the ice with York on the bench, but RPI could not get the tying goal in the closing minute.
Cornell will take on Princeton in the ECAC Hockey semifinals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y., following the first semifinal between top-seeded Yale and fourth-seeded St. Lawrence, which will begin at 4 p.m. Both semifinal games will be televised by the NHL Network.
