GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Cornell men's hockey team fell to Bemidji State in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship game on Sunday night in Grand Rapids, Mich., falling by a 4-1 margin. Bemidji State will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four, to be played on April 9 and 11 in Washington, D.C.

Freshman Sean Collins scored the lone goal for the Big Red, which closes out the 2009 season with a 22-10-4 record. Ben Scrivens made 17 saves in goal for the Big Red, which went scoreless in four power-play attempts. Bemidji State's Matt Dalton stopped 23 Cornell shots, and the Beavers were scoreless in five power-play chances.

Cornell got on the board first when, after a scorless first period, a faceoff won in the Bemidji State end was knocked by to Keir Ross. Ross, circling away from the play, flipped a shot toward the goal, where it appeared to skip off the shinpad of Collins and up over the shoulder of Dalton with 12:35 gone in the second period.

Bemidji State answered nearly two minutes later as Ryan Adams ripped a rocket of a shot over the shoulder of Scrivens from the corner point.

In the third period, the Beavers took the lead when Tyler Scofield ripped a wrist shot from the right wing that beat Scrivens over the blocker side just 4:05 in. With the Big Red trailing, the Beavers were able to wear down the clock, and Cornell was forced to pressure, but could not get another shot past Dalton.

Midway through the third period, the Beavers got an insurance goal when Matt Francis jammed home a shot from the post on Scrivens' left. As Cornell continued to pressure, the Beavers again held firm.

Bemidji State added an empty-net goal with 16:37 to play, as Scofield scored his second goal of the night by firing a wrist shot from inside the red line.

Sunday night's game marked the final contest for seniors Evan Barlow, Taylor Davenport, Troy Davenport, Tyler Mugford, Derek Punches and Jared Seminoff. Barlow was named to the all-tournament team as the lone Cornell representative.
