CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Big Red women's polo team was edged out by Virginia, 19-17, in the national championship match on Saturday afternoon.
Lizzie Wisner was named to the All-Tournament team. Cornell finishes its season with a 22-1 record.
Cornell scored the first goal of the match, but Virginia came back to have an 8-2 advantage after the first chukker.
The Big Red bounced back in the second to take an 11-9 lead into the half. The third chukker saw the two teams trade goals back and forth and Cornell maintained a 14-12 lead heading into the fourth.
The Cavaliers fought back in the fourth and took the lead with 2:40 left in the match. With a two-point penalty shot, Virginia took a 19-16 lead. Cornell tacked on one last goal to make it 19-17 as the clock ran out, and the Cavaliers rode away with the win.
