ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red wrestling team took first place at the NYS Collegiate Wrestling tournament this weekend in Newman Arena. Cornell wrestlers won five individual titles including
Frank Perrelli (125),
Mike Grey (133),
Colin McDonald (174),
Cam Simaz (197) and
Taylor Moore (HWT). Cornell's team title was its seventh since the tournament began in 1970 and first since 2002. The Big Red notched 194 points to finish in front of second place Army with 158.
At 125 pounds, Perrelli opened his day by pinning Cody Dill (Alfred State) in 2:24 to advance to the finals. Perrelli won the title with an 8-3 decision over Lance Penhale of Army.
Grey followed Perrelli with a win in the finals with a 5-2 decision over Kevin Smith of Buffalo. Grey pinned Travis Coffey (Army) in 1:08 in the semifinals.
Corey Manson finished in third place at 149 pounds. Manson won a 6-5 decision over Ithaca's Blaine Woszczak in his last bout of the day. He lost in the semifinals, but bounced back in the consolation round with a 12-4 win over Cortland's Stephen Perez.
At 157 pounds,
John Basting took fourth place. Basting defeated NYU's Matthew McGill, 6-4, but lost in sudden victory to Rudy Chelednick of Army, 3-1.
Justin Kerber placed second at 165 pounds. Kerber was edged out by John-Martin Cannon of Buffalo in sudden victory, 3-1. Kerber won by tech fall in his semifinal bout, 16-0, 5:15 over Derek Brenon (Ithaca).
McDonald won the championship at 174 with a 1-0 win over Oneonta's Chris Wade. McDonald nearly pinned his opponent in the semifinals but time ran out and he won a 12-5 decision over No. 2 seeded Ryan Mergen of Army.
Nate Holley pinned Buffalo's Josh Peters in 6:28 in the semifinals at 184 pounds. Holley finished in second place after losing to Binghamton's Nate Schiedel.
Simaz won by a 20-5 tech fall in the semis at 197 pounds over Cortland's Carl Korpi. He won the title with a 14-2 major decision over Buffalo's Jimmy Hamel.
At heavyweight
Taylor Moore defeated the No. 1 seed, Corey Waite (Binghamton), 3-2 to win the title. Moore won his semifinal bout by the same score over Joe Murphy of Cortland.
The Big Red will return to action on Sunday when it will play host to Iowa State for a 1 p.m. matinee in Newman Arena.
