ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell senior women's basketball player
Lauren Benson was named second-team All-Ivy, while freshman
Clare Fitzpatrick was selected to the Ivy League Rookie Team, as was announced this afternoon by the league office.
“This is a great way for Lauren to cap her collegiate career,” said head coach
Dayna Smith. “She's been a tremendous player for us over the past four years, so I am very pleased that the other coaches in the league recognized her. I am also very happy for Clare. She worked extremely hard this season and really provided us with some toughness. This is a great way for her to start her career and gives her something to build off of.”
Benson earns the third Ivy League accolade of her career, having been named honorable mention as a sophomore and second team as a sophomore. She leaves East Hill with her name inscribed all over the Cornell record book, graduating as the all-time leader in career assists (515), career games played (109), career minutes played (3,54) and career games started (97). She ended the season with 153 assists, just three assists shy of her own school record, and is ranked 14th in the nation for assists per game. She also holds the Big Red record for assists in a single season (156), assists in a single game (12), and career assist average (4.7). She is the only player in the history of the Cornell women's basketball program to tally at least 700 points, 500 assists, 300 rebounds and 100 steals in her career, and leaves the program ranking in the top-20 of 12 statistical categories.
Fitzpatrick saw action in all 27 games during her rookie season, making 26 starts. She finished the year ranked third on the team with 8.7 points per game and was second overall with 5.1 rebounds per game. Fitzpatrick also shot an impressive 43.2 percent from the floor. In 27 games, Fitzpatrick scored in double-digits 11 times, registered a team-high in rebounds nine times and led the team in scoring three times. She tallied a career-high 24 points vs. Penn on Feb. 12 and posted a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double vs. Dartmouth on Jan. 29.
